Repair of Cockpit Drains aka Scuppers on a Tanzer 22

The cockpit drains in a Tanzer 22 are quite troublesome. After double wrapping the current drain pipes with fiberglass mat and epoxy resin (West System), both pipes still leaked.  Even if this method works, it is a difficult job to complete. 

I gave up on the wrapping technique to try lining the drain pipes. Luckily standard PVC pipe fit. 7/8 O.D.( ¾ I.D.) is a common hardware store item. The 7/8 outer diameter fits snugly into the pipes. I had to open up one of the holes on the cockpit deck with a hole saw to fit the PVC pipe.

Here’s the process. Hopefully, the photos will fill in the blanks.

Starting with a 24 inch pipe, push the PVC pipe up the drain to check the fit.

24 inches will leave a few inches for handling. After you have fit it, mark it, and cut it with a pipe cutter.

After you are sure that it is right, overload the ends of the PVC pipe with a good marine grade adhesive caulk like 3M’s slow cure.  Let it cure per the instructions. 

With this method, the drains are a smaller diameter, but, it has worked well for two years. The bilge is dry and rainwater drains from the cockpit.

 To test for leaks on the hard, insert rubber stoppers in both drains. Be sure that the caulk is well cured.  Fill the cockpit with a few inches of water. After a few hours, check the bilge. If you see water, try again.

To keep the drains clean, push a dowel or a refrigerator brush through the pipe. A refrigerator brush looks like a 36 inch long bottle brush and can be purchased at most hardware stores in the cleaning supply section.

Good luck and take your time to get a tight seal.

Tanzer 22 rudder Design Types

Here are three rudder designs found on Tanzer 22’s in my local boat yards.

The square bottom is made by a local boatyard and is the most common design in the middle Chesapeake.

• Square bottom with 2 inch forward of the pintle for balance made by local boatyard. 30 inches below the hull. (Fin keel.)

• Original swept back- unbalanced. 24 inches below the hull. Drop keel determines depth in water.

Bimini On TANGO 22

Not many Tanzer 22's have a bimini; but, here's one way to do it.

On Tango 22, the main sheet is rigged forward of the original Tanzer 22 position.

I don’t know why a previous owner moved it. In our ESSA fleet of 15 T22’s, none are rigged this way. There is a bail installed at mid-boom to accommodate the padeye location on the cockpit deck.

The bimini was purchased from West Marine.  It is a Taylor Made model.

36” High, 74-78 wide x 48” long. Double check my dimensions. I did this in 2010.

Cost: about $320.00

 

When under sail, the boom clears the top of the bimini by an inch.

The photos shows the bimini with the boom hauled high with the topping lift.

 

You may be able to install a Bimini forward of the main sheet.

I’ve never seen a T22 like that but it may be possible.

I have Catalina 22 friends that have it that way; but their booms are higher.

Boom clearance will be the main issue.

You may be able to modify the bimini hardware to make it fit.

Of course, the shade will be mainly in the forward cockpit.

It does make a great difference when cruising in sun or rain.

It come with a quick zip cover.

A rare cooking tip from your Uncle George

Perfect Eggs!
Hard Boiled eggs are a problem for many of us. Green yokes, sticky shells, etc.

Here is a method that I heard about on a radio cooking program.
It is easy and works predictably.

1. Eggs need to be at least 4 days old.
2. Steam Eggs for 12 minutes
3. Cool in bowl with straight tap water (no ice)

This is a photo of my first trial of the steam method.

Egg shells pealed cleanly. Yolks are cooked and yellow.

This is all I got. I have no more cooking tips.

TANGO 22 will miss two of our loyal crew members as they return to their homeland. 
With four regular season races and a special Saturday race, there is much sailing left.
